Yuki Shingai was born in Kagawa and grew up in Tokyo, Japan.

While she majored in International Politics at Keio University, she visited the Robert Mapplethorpe Retrospective in 1997, which has been a tremendous influence on her artistic vision and aesthetics.

After university, she started her career as a TV commercial director at Dentsu Tec in 1999, where she worked on nationally-broadcast commercials and promotional videos for the major clients such as Mitsubishi, Subaru, House Foods, Otsuka Pharmaceutical, etc.

She was always so much interested in photography and worked with many cinematographers with photographic backgrounds. She also loved taking pictures with her point-and-shoot camera, but she never took it seriously until March 2009, when she finally realized it was "now or never" to shift her gear in life.

Six months later, in September 2009, she moved to New York to study photography and make more personal, intimate work. From September 2010 to June 2011, she studied fine art photography in the full-time program at the School of the International Center of Photography.

After gaining recognition in fine art and editorial photography, she obtained the artist visa (formally known as O-1 Visa for Individuals with Extraordinary Ability or Achievement) in 2012.

She lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work is highly conceptual and deals with absence, loss, traces, wounds in everyday life.
